Pittsburgh Escorts: New Secret Service rules on alcohol, unsavory bars

WASHINGTON (AP) — Seeking to shake off the disgrace of a prostitution scandal, the Secret Service late Friday tightened conduct rules for its agents to prohibit them from drinking excessively, visiting disreputable establishments while traveling or bringing foreigners to their hotel rooms.

In a Wonderland moment, the operator of the “Lips” strip club in San Salvador, Dan Ertel, organized a news conference late Friday and said he didn’t know whether any Secret Service employees were among his customers. Ertel said the club was the only one in the country where prostitutes don’t work. But a dancer who identified herself by her stage name, Yajaira, told the AP earlier in the day that she would have sex with customers for money after her shift ended.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano assured senators earlier this week that the incident in Colombia appeared to be an isolated case, saying she would be surprised if it represented a broader cultural problem. The next day, the Secret Service acknowledged it was investigating whether its employees hired strippers and prostitutes in advance of Obama’s visit last year to El Salvador. Prostitution is legal in both Colombia and El Salvador.

Secret Service investigating news reports of agents using prostitutes, strippers on other trip
WASHINGTON (AP) — Expanding the prostitution investigation, the Secret Service acknowledged Thursday it is checking whether its employees hired strippers and prostitutes in advance of President Barack Obama’s visit last year to El Salvador.
The disclosure came not long after the Homeland Security secretary assured skeptical senators that the recent prostitution scandal in Colombia appeared to be an isolated incident.
A spokesman for the Secret Service, Edwin Donovan, said the agency was investigating allegations raised in news reports about unprofessional behavior that have emerged in the aftermath of the Colombia incident. The latest, by Seattle television station KIRO-TV (http://bit.ly/IeN6bv), quoted anonymous sources as saying that Secret Service employees received sexual favors from strippers at a club in San Salvador and took prostitutes to their hotel rooms ahead of Obama’s visit to the city in March 2011.

Pittsburgh Escorts: DA: Guard in fatal $2M heist claims self-defense

But while Zappala believes Haines most likely did oppose the heist, he said the physical evidence doesn’t support what Zappala considers Konias’ self-serving claim that he only shot Haines after Haines aimed a gun at him. Haines was shot in the back of the head, Zappala said.
“I thought it was important for the Haines family to know he was not complicit” in the crime, Zappala said. Investigators have yet to recover Haines’ service weapon and may never know, therefore, if he drew it or whether Konias took it.
A team of FBI agents and Pennsylvania investigators have gone to Florida trying to trace Konias’ movements prior to his arrest early Tuesday in Pompano Beach, north of Miami.
Zappala did not offer details on reports that Konias confided in a prostitute.

Pittsburgh Escorts: Tip about Konias came from woman’s boyfriend

Mr. Konias remained in custody in the Broward County jail Tuesday night, not far from the ramshackle house where investigators said he spent time with a prostitute whose boyfriend called Pittsburgh homicide detectives Monday night to reveal where he was staying.
Along with a personal weapon, Mr. Konias surrendered the Glock pistol that police believe was used to kill Michael Haines, 31, of East McKeesport, with whom he operated an armored truck for Garda Cash Logistics. The two were working together on Feb. 28, making several cash collection stops before fellow Garda employees found the truck idling beneath the 31st Street Bridge in the Strip District.

Authorities believe he spent some of it on the prostitute and her pimp, who also lived in the house in Pompano Beach where he had been staying for several weeks. Authorities will have to determine whether they knew about Mr. Konias’ past and were complicit in hiding him.

Pittsburgh Escorts: Either feds or state is able to try Konias

She said investigators asked her about how she knew Mr. Konias and if she knew about the money. She said she did not. They also asked about a prostitute and dancer known as Summer, who may possess some of the stolen loot.
Investigators say Mr. Konias met Summer after he answered an online advertisement for her services and twice paid her for sex. He reportedly provided for her every need, lavishing her with cash. Later, the two had a falling out and Mr. Konias locked her from the room. She then broke in and stole $30,000 from a black duffle bag where he kept the cash, he reportedly told Ms. Flowers. The woman has not been seen since.
Besides Ms. Flowers, investigators also questioned her son, 27-year-old Leon Flowers, her brother John Flowers, who manages the property and is known as the pimp for the revolving door of prostitutes in the home, and two women whom Mr. Konias paid for sex over the past two weeks.

April 24, 2012 6:54 PM
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — New details have surfaced regarding what was going on at the house where Ken Konias was arrested.
The tip that led to the arrest of Konias Monday night came from a man Pittsburgh police describe as a pimp representing a prostitute. That man told police that the prostitute, who is also his girlfriend, was in the Pompano Beach, Fla., home with Konias two hours after the call came directly to Pittsburgh police homicide.
Konias had been smoking crack cocaine in the house for several hours with the prostitute. Sources tell KDKA-TV’s Marty Griffin, between the drugs and alcohol, Konias told the prostitute about a murder – an armored car robbery – he pulled in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Adult Entertainment: DA: Guard in fatal $2M heist claims self-defense

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh’s chief prosecutor says the armored car guard who spent nearly two months on the run after stealing more than $2 million from his truck admitted killing a fellow guard but claimed he fired in self-defense.
Konias was arrested Wednesday in Pompano Beach, Fla., eight weeks after he allegedly shot fellow Garda Cash Logistics guard Michael Haines in the back of the head before swiping an estimated $2.3 million and leaving their truck parked under a Pittsburgh bridge.
Pittsburgh police say Konias’ run came to an end after he confided his crimes to a prostitute.
A family attorney says he hasn’t spoken with Konias.
